Monzo Business vs a Monzo personal account for your business
By Chris
Monzo’s personal account terms say the account is for personal use only and must not be used for business. A limited company needs its own account anyway. For a sole trader, Monzo Business Lite costs nothing a month, so there is little reason to run business money through a personal account and several reasons not to.
The short answer
Do not run your business through a Monzo personal account. Monzo’s own terms rule it out, and the business account fixes the practical problems that come with mixing the two: tax set-aside, invoicing, accounting and clean records.
- Sole traders: the law lets you use a personal account if your bank allows it. Monzo’s personal terms do not. Monzo Business Lite is free.
- Limited companies: the company is a separate legal person, and GOV.UK says its banking must be separate from yours. Use a business account.
- Already bank with Monzo personally? You can add a business account from the same app, but you cannot get the £50 referral reward.
What Monzo’s personal terms say
We read Monzo’s current account terms and conditions (Version 2.11, 18 August 2026) on 9 October 2026. The relevant sentence is near the top:
“Your Monzo Current Account and linked Pots are for personal use only and mustn’t be used for business purposes.”
Later, in the section on Monzo’s responsibility, the terms say that because the account is for personal use only, Monzo is not responsible for loss of profit, loss of business, business interruption or loss of business opportunity, and that this applies “if you wrongly use it for commercial or business purposes”. In plain English: if something goes wrong with a personal account you have been using for trade, you cannot claim for what it cost your business.
The terms also list the reasons Monzo may close an account immediately or stop you using your card or app, and one of them is breaking the terms of the agreement. We are not suggesting Monzo closes accounts the moment a customer is paid by a client. The point is simpler: using the personal account for a business is outside what you agreed to, and the business account exists so that you do not have to.
Monzo Business and the personal account, side by side
Both accounts sit in the same Monzo app. The difference is in what each is allowed and built to do.

Sole traders: allowed by law, not by Monzo
A sole trader and the business are legally the same person, so there is no law requiring a separate business account. GOV.UK’s guidance on what records to keep says you “might be able to use a personal or business bank account” and tells you to check with your bank which type you can use. It also says your records must be accurate and you must be able to identify business transactions.
So the answer depends on the bank, and at Monzo the answer is the business account. Because Lite has no monthly fee, the usual reason for avoiding a business account, the cost, does not apply. Lite still gives you free UK transfers, Tap to Pay, payment links and free Making Tax Digital for Income Tax software, which matters now that Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to sole traders with qualifying income over £50,000 from 6 April 2026.
Even where a bank allows it, keeping business and personal money apart is the easier way to run a sole trader business. Your Self Assessment figures come from one account, an HMRC enquiry does not involve your personal spending, and you can see at a glance whether the business is making money. Our guide on whether sole traders need a business bank account covers this in more depth, and the general question for any bank is answered in can I use my personal account for business?
Limited companies: a business account is the only sensible option
For a limited company the question barely arises. GOV.UK’s guidance on company and accounting records says there “must be a clear division between the company’s finances and those of the owners and directors”, and that “your company’s banking must be separate from your personal banking”. The simplest way, it says, is to open a business bank account.
The money a customer pays your company belongs to the company. If it lands in your personal account, you are holding company money, and taking it for yourself without the proper route creates a director’s loan. GOV.UK’s directors’ loans guidance explains the consequences: if you owe the company money and do not repay it within 9 months of the end of the company’s accounting period, the company pays Corporation Tax at 33.75% of the outstanding amount, and a loan of more than £10,000 brings extra tax responsibilities for you and the company.
Monzo Business accepts sole traders and private limited companies (limited by shares), and the person applying must be a director. Our guide to paying yourself from a limited company covers salary, dividends and how the money should move between the two accounts.
What Monzo Business adds
Beyond permission, the business account has tools the personal account does not. On every plan, including free Lite:
- Getting paid by card: Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android, no card reader, and reusable payment links and QR codes. Stripe charges £0.20 + 1.4% for UK and European cards.
- Making Tax Digital: free Making Tax Digital for Income Tax software, built on Sage, for sole traders and landlords.
- Separate records: statements and exports that contain only business transactions, plus a web app for payments and statements.
On Pro (£9 a month) and Team (from £25 a month):
- Tax Pots: a percentage of every incoming payment, moved automatically, up to 3 Tax Pots. More on how they work in Monzo Business tax pots.
- Invoicing: invoices and quotes in the app or on the web, with automatic matching and a pay-by-card link. See Monzo Business invoicing.
- Accounting: sync with Xero, FreeAgent, Sage and QuickBooks, so your accountant works from the bank feed rather than screenshots.
- Team access: sole traders can have a team of 3 (you plus 2), so a bookkeeper can see the business account without seeing your personal spending.
- Team plan: expense cards, payment approvals, bulk payments and a bigger team.
Which plan you need depends on how much of that you would use. The Lite vs Pro vs Team comparison sets out what each includes.
FSCS: one limit or two?
Both accounts are with Monzo Bank Limited, so both are covered by the FSCS up to £120,000 per eligible depositor. Whether that is one limit or two depends on how you trade.
The FSCS’s small business guidance says a limited company can claim for its business account and you can separately claim for your personal account. A sole trader’s business and personal accounts are added together, with one limit for both. If you are a sole trader with a large combined balance at Monzo, holding some of it with a different banking group spreads the protection. Our FSCS guide for business accounts explains the rules.
If you already bank with Monzo
You do not need a personal account to open Monzo Business: it is no Monzo personal account needed. If you already have one, you apply from inside the same app, and both accounts then sit side by side, which makes moving money from the business to yourself quick. Monzo checks your business details as part of the application, and people with significant control are verified at sign-up. Step-by-step instructions are in how to open a Monzo Business account.
Monzo Business is for sole traders and private limited companies (limited by shares) only. It does not accept partnerships, LLPs, PLCs, charities, CICs, companies limited by guarantee, trusts and funds, so if your business is one of those, see Monzo Business alternatives.
The referral reward: only if you are new to Monzo
If you have a Monzo personal account now, or have ever had one, you cannot get the £50 referral reward on Monzo Business. Monzo’s terms are clear: if the person joining has never opened a Monzo account before, neither side is paid. That includes joint accounts. You can still open a business account and it works exactly the same; there is just no reward.
If you have never had a Monzo account of any kind, opening through our link means £50 for you and £50 for us, as long as you download the app, apply, add money and make a first card payment within 30 days. Not sure whether you qualify? The bonus checker asks five questions.
£50 in four steps, within 30 days
- 1Open our link on your phone and download the Monzo app
- 2Apply for a business account
- 3Add money (any amount)

Moving business money across
If you have been taking business payments into a personal account, moving them is mostly admin. Open the business account, then work through what points at the old one:
- Give customers your new account details, and update the details on your invoice template and website.
- Change payout details on platforms that pay you, such as card processors, marketplaces and booking sites.
- Move business Direct Debits and subscriptions to the business account or its card.
- Leave a buffer in the personal account for a month or two to catch late payers, and move anything that arrives across.
- From then on, pay yourself from the business account to the personal one: drawings for a sole trader, salary or dividends for a company director.
Keep the old statements. For a sole trader, the business transactions in the personal account are still part of your records for that tax year.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my Monzo personal account for business?
Monzo’s personal account terms say no. They state that the current account and linked Pots are for personal use only and must not be used for business purposes. Monzo can close an account immediately if it believes you have broken the terms. Monzo Business has a free Lite plan, so cost is not a reason to use the personal account instead.
Is it illegal for a sole trader to use a personal account?
No. GOV.UK says a sole trader might be able to use a personal or business bank account and should check with their bank which type they can use. The law does not require a separate account. Your bank’s terms can, and Monzo’s personal terms do not allow business use.
Does a limited company need a business bank account?
In practice, yes. GOV.UK says a company’s banking must be separate from the director’s personal banking because the company is a separate legal entity, and that the simplest way is a business bank account. Company money paid into a director’s personal account is the company’s money, not the director’s, and has to be accounted for.
Can I open Monzo Business if I already have a Monzo personal account?
Yes. Existing customers apply from inside the Monzo app, and the business account sits alongside your personal account. You do not need a personal account to open Monzo Business either. The one difference is the referral reward: it is only paid to people who have never had a Monzo account of any kind.
Is Monzo Business free?
The Lite plan has no monthly fee and includes free UK transfers, card payments, Tap to Pay, savings pots and 24/7 support. Pro and Team cost a monthly fee and add Tax Pots, invoicing and accounting integrations, with Team adding expense cards and approvals. Cash deposits and international payments carry fees on every plan.
Are my personal and business Monzo accounts protected separately by the FSCS?
For a limited company, yes: the company is a separate depositor with its own limit. For a sole trader, no: the FSCS adds a sole trader’s business and personal balances at the same bank together, so one limit covers both. If your combined balance is large, consider holding some of it at a different banking group.
