Is Monzo Business safe? FSCS protection, regulation and the risks

By Chris

Yes, in the ways that matter most. Monzo Business is provided by Monzo Bank Limited, a UK bank authorised by the PRA and regulated by the FCA and PRA, and eligible deposits are protected by the FSCS up to £120,000. The real risks are the ones that apply to any bank: account reviews, outages and money above the protection limit.

Is Monzo Business safe? The short answer

Monzo Business is as safe as any other UK bank on the points a regulator controls: it holds a full banking licence, it is supervised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and the Financial Conduct Authority, and eligible deposits are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. It is not an e-money app sitting on top of someone else’s bank.

FSCS protectionUp to £120,000 per eligible depositor
Business customersover one million (1 in 6 UK businesses)

The risks worth thinking about are practical rather than about Monzo failing: what happens if your account is restricted while Monzo reviews a payment, how you would cope with an outage, and whether you hold more than the FSCS limit in one place. Those apply to every bank, and the sections below cover each.

Is Monzo a real bank?

Yes. Monzo Bank Limited is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the FCA and the PRA. Its Financial Services Register number is 730427. You can confirm this yourself on the FCA’s Financial Services Register by searching for the firm name or number. That is worth doing for any financial provider you use, because scam sites sometimes imitate real ones.

The distinction matters because many business accounts are not provided by banks. Some are electronic money institutions, which hold your money under safeguarding rules rather than FSCS protection, and some are apps whose accounts are actually provided by a partner bank. Monzo Business is neither: the bank you deal with is the bank that holds the money.

FSCS protection up to £120,000

The Financial Services Compensation Scheme protects eligible deposits if a UK bank fails. The limit is £120,000 per eligible depositor, per bank, building society or credit union. Monzo’s security page says that if you are a sole trader or a small business, your eligible deposits may be protected up to that amount.

Two points from the FSCS guidance on banks are worth knowing:

  • The limit is per banking licence, not per account. Two accounts at the same bank, or at two brands sharing one licence, share a single limit. To protect more than £120,000, the money has to sit with different licences.
  • Money held as a client account or by a nominee has its own rules. Monzo Business cannot be used as a client account anyway.

Most small businesses never hold close to the limit in a current account. If yours does, from a large contract payment or a build-up before a tax bill, consider moving some to a savings account at another bank until you need it. Our guide to FSCS protection for business accounts covers the rules in more detail, including how bank and e-money accounts differ.

Sole traders vs limited companies

The FSCS treats the two differently, and it matters if you also bank personally with Monzo.

  • A limited company is a separate legal entity. The FSCS says it could claim up to £120,000 for its own account, separately from any claim you make for your personal account at the same bank.
  • A sole trader is the same legal person as the business. If you are a sole trader with a Monzo Business account and a Monzo personal account, the FSCS says you would be entitled to £120,000 in total, not twice.

Partnerships, which Monzo does not bank, are limited to a single claim for the partnership. For a sole trader with substantial personal savings at Monzo as well as a business balance, spreading money across banks is the simple fix.

Security features on Monzo Business

Monzo’s security page lists the everyday protections: instant notifications, card freeze, biometric login and a 'Monzo calling?' check. In practice that means:

  • Instant notifications for every payment, so unexpected activity is visible at once.
  • Card freeze and unfreeze in the app if a card is lost or you suspect fraud.
  • Biometric login with face or fingerprint, which you can require every time the app opens.
  • A call status check: if someone phones claiming to be Monzo, the app shows whether Monzo is really calling. Monzo says it will never call without arranging it first.
  • Payee warnings when the account details you are paying do not match what Monzo expects, which is the main defence against invoice-redirection fraud.
  • Virtual cards on Pro and Team, so a subscription or online supplier never sees your main card number.
  • Team permissions on Team, including spend and transfer limits per person with admin approval above them.

These are similar to what other app-based banks offer. None of them protects against being talked into sending money yourself, which is how most business fraud now happens. A rule that nobody pays a changed bank detail without checking it by phone on a known number is worth more than any app feature.

Account freezes and fraud checks

Search for any bank’s name with “account frozen” and you will find stories. Monzo is no exception. It helps to understand why it happens.

UK banks have legal duties under money laundering and fraud rules to understand who their customers are and what their money is for, and to act when activity looks unusual. That can mean holding a payment, restricting an account, or asking for documents while they review. Banks are often limited in what they can tell a customer about why. This is true at Monzo, Starling, Tide and the high-street banks alike.

Common triggers include:

  • a large or unexpected incoming payment that does not match what you said the business does;
  • activity very different from the turnover and countries you gave when you applied;
  • payments to or from accounts that have themselves been flagged;
  • missing or out-of-date information, such as a Companies House record that does not match.

The practical lessons: describe the business accurately when you apply, tell Monzo before you receive an unusually large payment, keep invoices and contracts that explain significant transactions, and keep your Companies House details up to date. None of this guarantees an account will never be reviewed, but it makes reviews shorter.

We do not have reliable data on how often Monzo restricts business accounts compared with other banks, and we are wary of anyone who claims to. Online reviews over-represent bad experiences, and banks do not publish comparable figures.

Monzo’s regulatory record

In July 2025 the FCA fined Monzo Bank Ltd £21m for inadequate anti-financial crime systems and controls between October 2018 and August 2020, and for repeatedly breaching a requirement not to open accounts for high-risk customers between August 2020 and June 2022. The FCA’s press release says Monzo’s controls had failed to keep pace with its growth, and that Monzo has since completed a financial crime change programme following an independent review.

This is relevant to safety in two ways. It concerned how carefully Monzo vetted new customers, not the protection of customers’ deposits, which is a separate matter covered by the FSCS. And the FCA noted it was the tenth fine on a bank for financial crime control failings in four years, so Monzo is not unusual in having been fined. Tighter controls across the industry are also part of why banks of all kinds ask more questions than they used to.

What to do if your Monzo Business account is frozen

  1. Contact Monzo in the app. Support is 24/7 in-app chat, phone and email. Ask what is needed and whether there is anything you can provide to speed things up.
  2. Provide evidence promptly. Invoices, contracts, explanations of where a payment came from. Clear, complete answers shorten reviews.
  3. Keep paying what you must from elsewhere. This is where a second account helps.
  4. Make a formal complaint if you think the bank has acted unfairly or is taking too long. Say clearly that it is a complaint. According to the Financial Ombudsman Service, a firm usually has up to eight weeks to respond, and only 15 days for complaints about payment services, fraud and scams.
  5. Escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service if you are unhappy with the final response or it does not arrive in time. You must refer the complaint within six months of the final response. The service is free. Small businesses can use it if they meet its size criteria; see the FOS page on complaints it can help with and its guide on how to complain.

If money has been taken by fraud, report it to Monzo straight away through the app as well; speed matters for recovering funds.

Scale and reputation

Monzo Business has over one million business customers, which Monzo describes as 1 in 6 UK businesses, and customers have set aside nearly £7 billion in Tax Pots. Scale is not the same as safety, but it means Monzo Business is a large, mainstream part of UK business banking, not a niche experiment.

On public ratings, Monzo has 4.6 out of 5 on Trustpilot (all of Monzo, not business only) and 4.9 on the App Store (one app for personal and business). Both cover Monzo as a whole rather than business banking specifically, and ratings of this kind say more about everyday experience than about the safety of deposits. Treat them as one signal among several.

Reducing your risk, with Monzo or any bank

  • Keep a second business account for resilience, ideally at a different banking group. Our Monzo Business alternatives page covers good second accounts.
  • Keep balances above £120,000 at different licences.
  • Know the difference between bank and e-money accounts. Revolut Business and Wise Business both hold business balances as electronic money, which is safeguarded rather than FSCS-protected (Revolut Business: “No: e-money, funds safeguarded”; Wise Business: “No: e-money, funds safeguarded”). Our comparison of Monzo Business and Revolut Business explains what that means.
  • Turn on biometrics and notifications, and set team permissions on Team.
  • Verify changed bank details by phone on a known number before paying.
  • Keep records that explain large or unusual transactions.

If you are weighing Monzo Business against other options, our Monzo Business review covers the account as a whole, and the best business bank accounts comparison puts it alongside the rest of the market. If you decide to open one and have never had a Monzo account, the Monzo Business referral pays £50 to each side.

Frequently asked questions

Is Monzo Business a real bank?

Yes. Monzo Business accounts are provided by Monzo Bank Limited, which is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the FCA and the PRA. Its Financial Services Register number is 730427, which you can check on the FCA register. It is a fully licensed UK bank, not an e-money institution, so eligible deposits are protected by the FSCS.

Is my money protected with Monzo Business?

Eligible deposits are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme up to £120,000 per eligible depositor, per banking licence. Most small businesses are eligible. For a limited company, the company is a separate depositor from you personally; for a sole trader, business and personal money at the same bank share one limit.

Can Monzo freeze my business account?

Yes, as can any UK bank. Banks have legal duties to prevent money laundering and fraud, and may restrict an account while they review activity or ask for information. The usual triggers are unexpected payment patterns, large or unusual incoming payments, or missing information about the business. Replying promptly with clear evidence is the quickest way through.

What can I do if Monzo freezes my business account?

Contact Monzo in the app, ask what information it needs, and provide it promptly. If you are unhappy with how it is handled, make a formal complaint. Banks usually have up to eight weeks to respond, or 15 days for some payment-services complaints. If you are still unhappy, eligible small businesses can take the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service, free, within six months of the final response.

Is Monzo Business safer than Revolut Business or Wise?

In one specific respect, yes. Monzo is a bank, so eligible deposits are covered by the FSCS. Revolut Business and Wise Business hold balances as electronic money, which is safeguarded rather than FSCS-protected. Safeguarding is a real protection, but it is a different one. Both models are regulated; check which applies to any account you use.

Should I keep a second business bank account?

Many small businesses do, whichever bank they use. A second account means that if one is restricted during a review, or if a bank has an outage, you can still pay staff and suppliers. It also lets you keep balances above the FSCS limit at different banking licences. It is a sensible precaution, not a sign that any bank is unsafe.
