Business bank account tools: bonus checker, plan picker and calculators

By Chris

Four small tools for the questions we are asked most: will I get the Monzo Business £50, which plan do I need, how much tax should I put aside, and what will a business bank account actually cost me a year.

Each tool runs in your browser. Nothing you type is stored or sent to us, and none of them connects to Monzo, another bank or a credit reference agency. They use the same published figures as the rest of this site, each one linked to its source and dated, so when a fee or a rate changes the tools change with it.

Will I get the £50? The bonus checker

The Monzo Business referral pays £50 to you and to us, but only if you have never opened a Monzo account before and finish four steps within 30 days: download the app, apply, add money and make a first card payment. The bonus checker asks five questions in the order that catches problems earliest.

The first two decide whether Monzo will open an account at all: it accepts sole traders and private limited companies (limited by shares), and you must be UK based and UK tax resident only. The third is the one that trips most people up: a personal account from years ago still counts. The last two are about doing things in the right order, because the referral is a link, not a code. If the answer is no, the checker says so and points you somewhere useful instead of to our link.

Lite, Pro or Team? The plan picker

Monzo Business has three plans: Lite at free, Pro at £9 a month and Team from £25 a month. The plan picker asks which features you need, such as Tax Pots, invoicing, accounting sync, expense cards or bulk payments, and how many people need access. It names the cheapest plan that covers all of them and works out a year’s cost, including the free first month on Pro and £5 a month per extra team member on Team.

It deliberately leaves out savings interest, because Monzo’s published rates vary by page and by plan. For the full feature-by-feature view, see Lite vs Pro vs Team.

How much tax to set aside: the tax calculator

The tax set-aside calculator takes what you expect to earn and spend this year and estimates the tax: Income Tax and Class 4 National Insurance for a sole trader, with Scottish rates if you live in Scotland, or Corporation Tax with Marginal Relief for a limited company. Tick VAT-registered and it adds a simplified VAT estimate.

The output is a percentage of each incoming payment, which is exactly what a Monzo Tax Pot needs: a percentage of every incoming payment, moved automatically. Every rate is the 2026/27 figure from GOV.UK, linked on the page. It is an estimate for setting money aside, not a tax return; our Tax Pots guide explains how to set the pot up.

What will an account cost? The cost calculator

The cost calculator asks for your monthly UK transfers, cash deposits and international payments and adds up a year of fees on Monzo Business and ten other UK accounts, from Starling and Tide to the high-street banks. It shows year one and the cost after any free period, flags accounts that cannot take cash, and shows a provider’s own wording wherever a fee is not a fixed number.

It is the tool most likely to recommend something other than Monzo. A business that pays in a lot of cash at a branch, or that moves most of its money in other currencies, may well be better served elsewhere, and the best business bank accounts comparison explains who each account suits.

Which tool to use first

If you have already decided on Monzo Business, use the bonus checker first, then the plan picker. There is no point weighing up Pro against Team if the account will not open for your business type, and the checker takes under a minute. The plan picker then tells you which plan to choose when you sign up; the reward is the same on every plan.

If you are still comparing providers, start with the cost calculator, because it is the only one of the four that looks beyond Monzo. Then read the comparison for the account that comes out best on your numbers, and come back to the plan picker if that is Monzo.

The tax calculator stands on its own. It is useful to anyone who is self-employed or runs a company, whichever bank they use, and many people run it again each spring when new rates take effect or after a good quarter changes what they expect to earn.

How we built these

Every Monzo figure the tools use lives in one file on this site, with the page it came from and the date it was last checked, currently 9 October 2026. Nothing is typed into a tool by hand. Competitor fees come from each provider’s own pricing page or tariff and are linked wherever they appear. Where a provider’s wording is ambiguous, the tool says “check provider” rather than guess.

We bank with Monzo Business ourselves, as a limited company on the Team plan, and earn the referral reward when someone opens an account through our link. That is disclosed on how we make money, and it is why the tools are built to say no when no is the honest answer. If you spot a figure that has changed, tell us and we will correct it and re-date the page.

Frequently asked questions

Are these tools free to use?

Yes. They run entirely in your browser, need no sign-up and do not ask for any personal details. Nothing you type is stored or sent to us; the only thing recorded is an anonymous analytics event saying which result was shown.

Do the tools connect to Monzo or to my bank?

No. They use the published figures held on this site, each linked to its source and dated. They cannot see your accounts, run a credit check or tell you what Monzo or any other provider will decide.

How up to date are the figures?

Monzo figures were last checked against Monzo's own pages on 9 October 2026, competitor fees on the same date, and tax rates against GOV.UK for the 2026/27 tax year. Each tool page lists its sources, and we re-check after any announced change.

Which tool should I use first?

If you are thinking of opening Monzo Business through our link, start with the bonus checker: it tells you in five questions whether the referral reward can apply. If you are still choosing between providers, start with the cost calculator.

Can I use the tax calculator without a Monzo account?

Yes. The percentage it suggests works with any account that lets you move money into a separate pot or savings account, or with a standing order. Monzo's Tax Pots simply automate it.
